Running makes me feel like I am on top of the world...

Have a long trail run in the Northshore tomorrow with my fast running friends, Jonathan and Alexandria. This is pretty much the highlight of my week!

I love RUNNING! Boston here I come!

"You got something in here. It’s so deep in there. And you gotta beat it. You gotta face that fear. You’ve got to. It's the hardest thing you'll ever have to do. If you do, it'll change your life. You'll be able to push right through the pain. Open that door. And when your legs can't move and your lungs can't breathe and your eyes can't see, you'll know that it's just the beginning."
Quote from the movie “4 Minute Mile”.

Happy weekend and happy trails!

Contrary to uninformed belief, pigs are some of the cleanest animals around.

When we were kids, my sister Mila and I had a pot-belly pig as pet. His name was Coqui and he used to watch television with us; Pippi Longstocking was his favorite show. Pigs suffer more than any other animal in the farming industry. I doubt this picture will move you to stop eating bacon, though I wish it would, but at the very least become more informed and buy food products that come from facilities that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal treatment.

Training for Boston rolls on…

My workout for today: 8 easy miles with perfect weather conditions and through my beautiful City Park. I am busy as ever but running keeps me happy, energized, grounded, and balanced, plus Boston is staring me in the face. The hill (bridge) workout yesterday morning kicked my butt but I foam-rolled for about 10-15 minutes when I got home. I tell everybody to get a foam roller because it is the best thing to do for overused muscles. It gets rid of some of the kinks and tightness and loosens up the body. No need to pay for deep-tissue massages or acupuncture, which I did before. Foam-roll and run happy!

Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Audio)

Another great great song... feeling so frisky while listening to great music and getting ready for class. Must be the hard hill-work-out that absolutely kicked my butt this morning. That answers the question why I do that stuff... because it makes me feel AMAZING... Exercise, eat right, listen to great music, feed your intellect, explore your creativity, think outside the box, and LOVE life...

Training for the hills

Tomorrow I start training for hills but my body is still recovering from 17 flat miles logged in over the weekend. Besides that, I had very little sleep last night and a long day at work today. By the time I left the office today my body was literally breaking down and feeling weak. I knew I needed a major protein boost. Got home and put a pound of salmon in the oven, baked some sweet potatoes and had a green spinach salad with avocados. I ate like I had not eaten in weeks, then took a short evening nap, woke up to my cat’s meows, and now I think am ready to tackle hill training tomorrow, provided I get a good night sleep later on. Yikes! All of this to be prepared to run the hills. Hills are my least favorite part of training for a race but I have to train my quads and endurance for the various hills at the Boston Marathon, especially for the notorious Heartbreak Hill. This monster of a hill climbs 91 feet and what makes it tougher is the rate at which the change happens, and that the hill comes up after runners have traveled over 20 miles, many of which are grueling down hill miles. By the time one reaches Heartbreak hill, I hear the quads have had it. Again, why am I doing this?

Love this...

The things I want…

A small yard of my own, why? Because I want to have my own small garden and be able to plant and grow some of my food and eat from the fruit of the earth (the pachamama) from my own yard. I was thinking very hard about this early today. Although I only eat fish, I eventually want to follow a strict vegetarian diet for health reasons but mostly for ethical reasons. The challenge that I have in wanting to do this is eating enough protein to fuel my muscles and endure training as a distance runner. I know it can be done because there are many vegetarian runners. I had a long conversation with one of my classes about this today and some of my students think I am crazy—what a compliment! ;-) Then of course I will need time to work in the garden and tend to it, even if it is a small one, but how therapeutic it would be… My dog of course would enjoy the yard and the garden too. I want a small garden...

Dear Martin, wish you were here...

a quick and fast run

Went running this morning with my neighbor and friend, Jonathan. He is a bit younger and much faster than I am, an accomplished high school runner during his prime and holder of some short distance records, and still a superb and extremely fit runner, and way too modest for a runner. Fooled me. I thought I was going for an easy run with him. But dear Jonathan took off right from the beginning assuming a comfortable pace FOR HIM, 8:20 mpm… Holy shit! Not a good match for me, a slow long distance runner, trying to get back into the swing of training, plus I normally start my runs at around 9:40 mpm pace and gradually increase my pace to a comfortable 8:50 mpm, which is my fastest training pace. All I could say was, “I will never be able to keep up with this guy!” Surprisingly, I was able to stay right behind him and after mile 4 the universe worked in my favor and Jonathan began to slow down… YES! We ran the last two miles side by side at a comfortable 9:00 mpm pace. Whew!  I love being pushed and want to run with this guy again and again and again… Happy trails all!

Boston bound, and maybe NYC bound also!

Arranged my Spring class schedule and other commitments around this major event, the Boston Marathon 2015! Got my plane tickets and lodging worked out, next is TRAINING!!!

And... to make things even more EXCITING this year, today I preregistered to run the NYC Marathon on November 1, 2015. I hope I get in!

Missing running so much but after today, I am on it... shedding off a few extra lbs and back on my marathon-training diet.

Meaningful changes...

After a few weeks in 80 and 90 degrees weather, my body is trying to adjust to the cold temperatures and I am already fighting a nagging cold. Notwithstanding how I feel, yesterday I went out for a run around City Park. It was around 27 degrees but it felt more like in the teens and I had to wiggle my toes at every stride to shake off some of the numbness; please take me back to the Caribbean Sea…
Aside from the cold, I am happy to be home with my cat and my dog. I missed them so much and how quickly they have both already adjusted to being back home. My cat is full of life and I love how she fills up all the empty spaces with her playfulness and feline energy and sounds. My dog is getting old but she ran circles around me like a young pup when I picked her up. I know she missed me and I can see some sadness in her eyes. Her caretaker told me she stood and looked out the window often as if waiting for my return (i hurt).
I returned home to a busy work schedule already, meetings and class preps, all within a few hours of my arrival and am not ready for any of that. Besides all the responsibilities of my job, I am venturing into a different path this new year –a major undertaking that, along side my job and my Boston marathon training, will occupy my time 100%, leaving me with no time for anything else. Suffice it to say that I am pursuing a renewed goal of mine and doing so with much fear and trepidation, but I am doing it because now it seems the right time and because I don't want to regret not chasing after this particular endeavor.

This semester is going to be a hell of a ride and next to all my fears and anxieties, I am also experiencing great excitement in anticipation of meaningful changes…

Happy holidays!

I have two extremely busy weeks ahead but afterwards, it’s paradise in South America for a few weeks. A long voyage, a quiet retrieval, a blissful absence to be refreshed with the joy of dancing, laughter and love… I shall miss my pets but they will be left in loving, reliable hands.
Wake up and live.
I am saying goodbye for now and shall return to this blog sometime in 2015. Happy holidays!

Medianoche...I like that!

A fun and busy Thanksgiving day, and even my kitty was entertained. One of my students renamed her Midnight... I like the sound of that!

Edith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien - (original)

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

a cat invaded my bed

Late last night I was awaken by stealthy little feet stepping on my bed, then I felt a warm little body nesting in between my legs as if tucking herself in for the night.  I couldn’t believe it. This was the first time my cat had come this close to me and no movement I made deterred her from staying put. I was
delighted of course to see how comfortable she has become with her surrounding.  As for me, a 10-mile run at the crack of dawn, a day full of chores and online teaching, and then a busy evening with friends, I plummeted into deep sleep very quickly and knew nothing more about the cat that invaded my bed last night...

I run for mental and physical health.

To reap so many benefits while doing something one absolutely loves is the ultimate privilege. Running helps me get motivated and when I run and am out there alone with my thoughts, I often find the bitter-sweet gift of PERSPECTIVE.

Sometimes when I feel like I've lost my way and have drifted away, running brings me back. It's the whole experience of being out there with nature and the rhythm of life that gives perspective to my world. It's the realization and joy of having a body so wonderfully and intricately made and one that keeps on giving.

Big things in life seem so menial compared to the joy of being healthy, feeling energized and rejuvenated to love life with real passion and to embrace the OTHER completely. My heart and mind are filled with that kind of passion, and that's what running does for me.

Lace up your sneakers and get some of that great life-mojo!
